Mission Statement

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society exists to prevent cruelty, alleviate pain, fear and suffering in animals, and to promote a society based on humane principles.

Goal

PAWS fulfills its mission by working to provide leadership in humane education, public awareness, legislation, shelter support, charitable veterinary services, animal re-homing, counseling, investigation and legal support.

Major

1) Drafted and succesfully lobbied for the first national animal welfare law in the Philippines.

2) Has the first and only animal shelter whose operations are patterned after US shelters with an active adoption program run completely by volunteers. PARC is an accredited shelter partner of the Humane Society of the United States.

Achievements

3) Launched the first ever campaign against animal cruelty through TV advertisements ("NO TO ANIMAL CRUELTY!" in cooperation with local station ABS-CBN) in 1998.

4) The only local animal welfare organization that protested against the following

  • dolphin shows in Ayala (1998) and STAR CITY circus (2000)
  • rodeo in Luneta (2003)
  • elephant show in Araneta Center (2003)
  • testing of lethal injection for human death row inmates on animals (2001)
  • proposed bullfights in Manila (1999)

5) The only local animal welfare organization that filed a court case against OCEAN ADVENTURE together with EARTH ISLAND INSTITUTE (an environment group). Was able to temporarily close down the marine park in 2005.

6) Organized the first animal blessings in the country in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (1995 - Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church) - in order to promote kindness to animals in a predominantly Catholic country.

7) One of only two animal welfare organizations that sits in the Committee of Animal Welfare (CAW) - a group or body created by the Animal Welfare Act to help the government draft implementing rules for the Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines.

8) Attends to an average of 30 calls a day re: different animal welfare, animal care, animal control concerns and helps local government officials with many of their animal-related problems.

9) Conducts humane education for pre-school, high school and university levels in Metro Manila schools - on a regular basis. More than 100 schools visited since PAWS' reorganization in 1986.

10) Conducts the DOCTOR DOG (Animal-assisted therapy) PROGRAM in hospitals, schools and institutions. Over 50 visits clocked in by volunteer humans and therapy animals since Program was introduced in the country in 1998.

11) More than 200 animals rehomed since its animal shelter (PARC) was opened in 2001.

12) More than 300 dogs and cats neutered since spay-neuter clinic was opened in 2004. Offered the first SPAY DAY to the Filipino public in 2004.

13) Runs PARC -a shelter that serves also as an animal-welfare information center - that renders service to the public Mondays to Saturdays 10am to 5pm. Shelter runs purely on donations and through its own fundraising events, and does not receive any financial help from the government.

14) At least three PAWS officers have interned at US shelters on scholarship from Humane Society International.

15) Organized the first ASIA for ANIMALS Conference in Manila together with HSUS, IFAW and SPCA-HK.

16) The only local animal welfare group associated with all these three international animal welfare groups based in different countries: HSUS (United States), RSPCA (Britain)and ANIMALS ASIA FOUNDATION (China, Hongkong).
