Cop
faces trial for killing and eating a bomb-sniffing
dog
DAVAO
CITY, May 4 (PNA) -- For stealing, slaughtering and
eating a bomb-sniffing dog, a senior police officer
will face trial in court after the City
Prosecutor's Office (CPO) found him criminally
liable.
City
prosecutor Raul Bendigo approved the findings of
assistant city prosecutor Mariam Mastura-Mamukid
indicting Senior Police Officer (SPO) 2 Remberto
Orencia, assigned at PNP XI headquarters in Camp
Catitipan, Buhangin, Davao City to the crime of
theft and violation of Republic Act 8485 or Animal
Welfare Act of 1998.
Orencia
was tagged as the killer of a Labrador dog owned by
Chief Inspector Alden Delvo. The dog was used by
the police in detecting explosives.
In
his affidavit-complaint, Goldie, wife of Chief
Inspector Delvo, sued Orencia based on the
testimony of their neighbors at Camp
Catitipan.
The
complainant said Orencia stole, killed and ate the
four-year-old Labrador dog named Kobe at around 12
noon on October 28, 2004 while they were in Cebu
City to observe All Souls Day and All Saints
Day.
Goldie
added that Kobe had been undergoing training for
bomb-sniffing for already six months and even used
by operatives of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit
(SATU) in various operations before the dog was
killed.
Delvos
neighbors revealed that Orencia hit the dog with a
piece of wood and then slashed its neck with a
knife, cooked it and then ate it.
When
confronted, Orencia reportedly said that he was
only following an order from their superior to kill
all stray dogs in the area.
But
Goldie said that Orencias reason was
unacceptable to her since the dog was a very
friendly dog which do not deserve to be killed or
captured and she insisted that the policeman had a
motive in killing the dog.
The
complainant added her family suffered since the dog
was very close to them especially to their
children.
