Eating
a dog's brain can give you
rabies
DAVAO
CITY, March 21, 2003 (PNA)--"It's not only bad for
the health, it's also illegal."
Department
of Agriculture livestock chief Dr. Rafael Mercado
has warned the public against eating the meat of
stray and unvaccinated dogs to avoid rabies
infection.
He
also frowned on the practice of eating a dog's
brain or mixing it with other food, as it poses a
very high risk of acquiring the rabies
virus.
At
the same time, Mercado said eating dog meat is
against the law which protects dogs and other
animals that are being used as food except for
cultural offerings.
On
the other hand, he urged the public to submit their
pets for vaccination to ensure that their "pets are
free from rabies."
He
made the call in line with the celebration of March
as Rabies Awareness Month which banners the theme
"Responsableng Amo: Matinong Aso".
